“I know what you mean, Jarek. When I saw you shot and thought you might die--” She pressed her lips together tightly for a moment before continuing. “There’s still so much I need to know. How did you find me?”

I took a breath, let it out slowly and said, “I had a tracker implanted in you while you were unconscious. I…wanted to be able to find you quickly if you needed help again.”

“I see…” To my infinite relief, a faint smile tugged at her mouth. “You know that was extremely arrogant and presumptuous?”

Solemnly, I said, “I do, yes. I also know that a lifetime of kusakhina wouldn’t cure me of such behavior, at least not when it comes to your safety.”

“Speaking of which…” Gently, she asked, “Are you all right, really?”

The question took me aback for a moment but only because I hadn’t thought of it myself. I had killed…again. But this time was entirely different. I felt no regret at all and certainly no guilt. With that realization, an old, painful weight lifted from my spirit.

Stroking the curve of her cheek, I said, “I am entirely well, thanks to you, myklyra.”

She sighed with pleasure and nuzzled into my caress. “What does that mean, myk… myklyra?”

  “It means beloved.”

She drew in a quick breath and touched her mouth gently to mine. Our hands entwined, our bodies speaking their own language.

Softly, she murmured, “Is the same word used for a man?”

My chest tightened. We had come so far so quickly yet all I could think of was the journey together that stretched out before us. A journey of two people and two worlds into a future that would take us all farther than we could ever have imagined.

“That would be ‘myklyri’,” I said.

Her gaze was at once hot and tender. “I like that, myklyri.”

The sound of that on her lips shattered the last of my restraint. I drew the robe from her and drew her down onto the bed with me. Tomorrow I would arrange a dinner with Arus and his Delia. The sooner she and Charlotte became acquainted, the more comfortable my beloved would be with what it meant to be a charl.

But now and for the hours that followed, we claimed one another, body and spirit, moving as one, becoming one, beyond all barriers, free and together.

Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed meeting Charlotte and Jarek.
